Mission

We seek the summit of creation as committed companions who believe that we can only lead by learning to follow; that we can only be passionate by first learning compassion; that we can only reach the destination by valuing the journey. We rise beyond the gifts we alone possess, and reach for the heights that we can only achieve together.

Over the past decade, the YRDSB system-wide arts program at Huron Heights Secondary School has held fast to the principles voiced in our mission statement. The advent of admission by audition for the 2009-2010 school year will not change the basic philosophy of the Arts Huron program.

Arts Huron has always been about achieving personal artistic growth within “a community of artists.” While many of our students specialize in drama, dance, music, or visual arts, many also follow a “combined major” or “triple threat” program. Both staff and students define Arts Huron as an “Integrated Arts Program” where we believe the experience and learning from other art disciplines is the foundation for building fully rounded artists and life-long lovers of the arts.

At Arts Huron, we believe in “Arts for Life.” Our ongoing challenge is to offer an elite program that will never indulge in elitism. The ideal Arts Huron student is an artist who puts himself or herself last, and puts the work and his or her creative partners first. To paraphrase the great Russian director, Konstantin Stanislavski, Arts Huron students “love the art in themselves; not themselves in the art.”

To those who wish to join our community of artists, we say welcome. Welcome to thousands of feet of hallways that chase their way in every direction. Welcome to peeling paint, battered lockers and weathered brownstone brick. And welcome to the bustling action of dancers and actors spilling out of classrooms to rehearse on balconies and stairwells; to choirs singing in washrooms, to guitarists picking away in parking lots, and artists sketching and arguing in the exhibition hall.

This is the life of an arts student at Huron Heights. This is the meeting place for enquiring minds, passionate learners, and committed companions who believe that the only way to reach the destination is by valuing each step along the pathway. Are you that kind of student?

Are YOU ready to “Reach for the Heights”?
