Dramatic Arts
The student will:
- Perform a memorized, prepared selection (a monologue) which will be mailed to the student with his/her appointment letter.
- The student will participate in a 90 minute workshop with other students.
- The student will be interviewed by a member or members of the audition panel.
Included in the audition package will be a “tip sheet” of what the panel will be looking for in the audition.
Music
Vocal
All students will:
- Participate in a 30-minute workshop including a theory quiz.
- Be required to sight read a piece of music.
- Be given an ear training test.
- Be interviewed.
- Be required to perform two contrasting solos which have a piano accompaniment. An accompanist will be provided. (A taped accompaniment is not acceptable.) Candidates must supply a copy of the music for the audition panel.
The titles of the required musical pieces for the solo auditions will be mailed out with the audition appointment letter.
Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion
All students will:
- Participate in a 30-minute workshop including a theory quiz
- Be required to sight read a piece of music
- Be given an ear training test
- Be interviewed.
- Be required to perform two contrasting selections enclosed with the appointment letter.
Note Percussion/Drums: You must prepare drum study, bells solo and scales (on the reverse side of your solo).
Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Viol)
All students will:
- Participate in a 30-minute workshop including a theory quiz
- Be required to sight read a piece of music
- Be given an ear training test
- Be interviewed
- Be required to perform the following:
- Technical material:
- Major Scales (2 octaves): arpeggios and broken thirds in keys of Bflat, G, D, A, C
- Minor Scale: harmonic and melodic (2 octaves) in keys of d, g, a, e
- One etude or Study presently being studied.
- Solos: Choose two contrasting pieces demonstrating differences in technique, style and tempo from Conservatory Book IV (or above) or Conservatory Book III (or above).

Visual Arts
Part I:
All Students will Submit a Portfolio consisting of:
- Self portrait
- 3d object or sculpture
- Still Life
- A recent sketch book
- 6 optional pieces. Students are encouraged to use a variety of drawing materials such as pencil, pencil crayon, ink, conte, charcoal, and oil pastel.
Students should refrain from working from photographs. All images should be labeled on the back with the student’s name, the date of creation, the material used, and the category to which it belongs (i.e., self portrait, 3D object, still life, or choice. Students should include a one page “Artist’s Statement” (details will follow with audition package).
Part II:
All students will participate in a 2 hour drawing workshop. Students will be lead through drawing lessons (all materials will be supplied) Workshop will focus on a shading exercise and a figure study.
Part I and Part II each count for 50% of the total mark to be assigned to each student.
Students will be informed of their audition time by letter and are to bring their portfolios with them at that time. Portfolios are not to be sent in ahead of time.
Dance
The student will participate in a one hour dance class which will be a combination of Ballet and Modern Dance. In groups of three or four, students will also be asked to do a short improvisation to demonstrate their personal creativity, musicality, and self-expression. Each student will also be asked to participate in an informal chat with the instructors. More information about appropriate dress for the audition will be mailed out to the student along with the student’s audition appointment time.
